Which Musical Instrument to Learn?

The most important decision after signing up your child for musical education is choosing the right musical instrument.

On the outset, people may think that it is not too hard to decide; just pick any interesting instrument. But parents know how hard it is to decide; after all, they will be investing a lot of money in the musical education and they don't want to choose something that the child is not too sure of. What if the child quits playing it for some reason or the other? It is panic time for many parents since they don't know much about the field.

Parents make their decisions based on various factors. If they are worried about expenses, they simply choose the music instrument that costs less. If they are attracted to status and fame, they simply choose the most "groovy" instrument. Some parents choose the instrument that their friends' children play. And some just go for the regular ol' piano.

Some parents are simply at their wits' end and they meet up with any teacher that has placed their ad in the newspapers. After consulting with the teacher, they impose their "wisdom" on their young children. Some parents want to fulfill their own unfulfilled wishes through their children, and unknowingly convince their children to take up the musical instrument that they wanted to learn. If they always wanted to learn the violin but couldn't, they force their children to learn to play the violin.

I have faced some funny and outright ridiculous situations when helping parents choose the right instrument for their kids. When I suggested the piano for a child based upon my observations about his personality, age and other factors, his mother rejected the idea because she wasn't sure how the piano would suit her home's interior design! And another parent did not like the idea of carrying an accordion to class and back! And a third one thought that a wind instrument would make a lot of noise and disturb everyone at home.

Dear parents, choosing the right music instrument for your child depending on his/her likings, personality, age and more factors is the most important decision of his/her musical education. Your child must love the instrument deep within the heart and this is the primary factor in maintaining unchanging interest in music.

So how do you make this important decision? Well, things are not so easy and free for that matter. Be ready to invest some of your time for your kid, and you will reap its unending benefits.

Some more important factors, apart from age and personality of your child, are his/her height and build. Some instruments require certain specific physical features to be able to be played properly.

Choosing Which Brass Musical Instrument to Learn

Choosing a brass musical instrument to start playing may seem quite a daunting prospect. There are several factors to keep in mind such as cost, the player's physical size and weight capabilities and availability of teachers of that instrument (there are some very good online databases to assist you in finding qualified teachers in your area). The key consideration to bear in mind when choosing a brass instrument is that playing it should be fun! It's a good idea to choose your instrument according to which genre of music you like. For example, if you want to play jazz, there is no sense in learning the euphonium, whereas trumpets are popular in all genres. Some musicians get a kick from playing in an orchestra. Others opt to go solo. It's a good idea for the budding musician to keep in mind at the outset an idea of the general direction he would like to go in. After all, what started out as a hobby may flourish to become a lucrative career, and what better than to be paid for playing the music you love!

Musical Genres

A classical symphony orchestra will usually feature tenor trombones, a bass trombone, a tuba, trumpets and horns.

A traditional brass band will incorporate a soprano cornet, euphoniums, a bass trombone, a flugelhorn, baritones, tenor trombones, tubas, cornets and tenor horns.

Big bands used in swing and jazz will usually incorporate trumpets, tenor trombones and a bass trombone.

Solo instrumentalists are used in a variety of music genres, from pop to folk to blues.

Brass Instruments Types

There are two families of brass musical instrument in modern music: valved and slide.

As the name suggests, valved instruments use a set of valves which the player operates with his fingers. Valves are usually piston valves, but may be rotary valves as in the case of tubas and horns (rotary valves require special care, for example they must be cleaned by an expert - see the cleaning section for further details). Most modern brass instruments are valved instruments, including the flugelhorn, cornet, trumpet, euphonium, French horn, tuba and tenor horn.

Slide instruments incorporate a slide to change the length of tubing, and thus raising and lowering the note. Trombones are the main family of slide instruments (bar the valve trombone, which is mostly used in jazz pieces).

Bugle

The bugle category of brass instruments incorporates bugles, trumpets, flugelhorns and cornets. There are subtle differences between these instruments in appearance, sound and playing technique. Buglists are sought after by brass bands, particularly military bands.

Trumpets

The trumpet is a popular choice of brass instrument. It is ideal for the beginner. Trumpets are used in a wide variety of music genres, which should help to keep learning interesting. Trumpets are convenient to transport and store and are relatively inexpensive.

Flugelhorn

Like the trumpet and cornet, the flugelhorn belongs to the bugle family of brass musical instruments. It is similar to the trumpet but its sound is slightly sweeter. Flugelhorns are widely used in a variety of music types, from classical to traditional brass band music, and are very popular in jazz.

Cornets

The cornet is similar to the trumpet, but with a slightly more melodic sound. Cornets are ideal for beginners because they are more compact than trumpets, which makes them easier to hold. Cornets are a vital component of a traditional brass band but, like the trumpet, their musical range is extensive. Cornets are relatively inexpensive to buy.

Euphoniums and Tubas

These instruments can be enormous and tend to be quite expensive. However, euphoniumists and tubist are becoming few and far between and so are always in demand. Tubas can be so big that you may struggle fitting it into the boot. Euphoniums are smaller scaled and have a wonderful range. These instruments are elementary to the classical symphony orchestra and the traditional brass band.

French Horn

A french horn is both a beauty to behold and a delight to the ear. A good French horn will be quite expensive and challenging to learn. French horn players quite a rarity. No classical orchestra would be complete without half a dozen, however, meaning that players are much in demand.

Trombone

Despite this instrument's impressive range, trombonists are becoming an endangered species! Though the trombone is a reasonably priced instrument, its slides are very delicate and must be handled with great care. The trombone is easy to learn and there is great demand for trombonists to play in classical, swing, jazz and traditional brass bands.

The History of Musical Instruments

Music and musical instruments are used to create sounds that are pleasing to hear and anything that produces sounds serves as musical instruments. Music has always been part of our cultural heritage and different types of instruments have evolved during the ages.

The origin of the first musical instruments dates back from ancient times and historians have found artifacts to be early flutes which are about 37000 years old. Various musical instruments developed in different parts of the world and with the rapid growth of civilization these instruments spread from their place of origin to far and wide.

In the Middle age period various instruments that had originated from one country were found in anointer region of the world. And this way the different cultures started sharing their music with each other.

Archaeologists found a bone carving that resembled and worked like a flute and it was proved that diatonic notes could easily be played on it. So we can say for sure that the flutes were the oldest known musical instruments.

There are many different types of instruments that were discovered later on like harps, lyres and cymbals. Plus a cylindrical pipe with three side holes was also discovered and resembled the bagpipes.

In olden days many cultures also assigned ritual functions to their musical instruments and because of this more and more precision instruments were developed and ribbon reed, flutes and trumpets evolved. The drums were used in religious rituals in the African and Russian cultures in the early days.

This led to the development of instruments for producing melodious sounds as before this melody was only associated with singing. The earliest form of melody was produced by pounding and stampeding tubes and drums which produced different sounds and notes. One would answer with a clear sound while the other note was a little darker. These paired instruments were called Bullroarers, skin drums and Shell trumpets. And the ancient people associated genders with the paired instruments and the bigger and energetic the instrument was called the father while the smaller and dull sound producing instruments was called the mother.

The early Xylophone originated in South East Asia and there were many other forms of musical instruments that evolved at different times in different cultures and civilizations spread all over the world. The popular instruments that are played in this era have somehow evolved from the different instruments whose development focused on effectiveness and skill.

Some cultures preferred playing with stringed instruments and this is the reason innumerable varieties of differ types of harps and lyres are depicted in many of the paintings found on the cave walls and these became the forerunner of the modern version of stringed instruments like the violin. The Greek and Roman musical instruments were simple and nearly all of them were originally from other cultures.

So we can truly say that music and musical instruments have always been part of our cultural heritage.

The Benefits Of Young Children Learning A Musical Instrument

There are many benefits in learning to play a musical instrument for anyone of any age. The benefits for young children who start learning a musical instrument from a young age are also apparent. With such a wide choice of musical instruments available, it might seem difficult in choosing the correct musical instrument for your child to learn. Remember, there will be other factors to consider including the initial cost of the instrument, any up keep and maintenance costs, not forgetting ensuring that the musical instrument remains attractive to learn as it did when it was first being considered. Furthermore, factors such as the size of the instrument through to the volume that it creates can also play a major role in determining what instrument is going to be the most appropriate to learn. Whichever musical instrument in eventually chosen, the chances are that it will provide hours, and years of enjoyment to the person learning it.

Age is also a big factor in considering the type of musical instrument to start learning. For example, young children aren't going to be able to control an instrument as well as adults. Their bone structures in their hands are still developing, as is their strength, so instruments such as the piano which can require the pianist to play with spread fingers might be deemed difficult. However, this must not put you off learning the piano if this is what you or your children are wanting to learn. Over time, their hands will become accustomed to stretching and learning to stretch to reach notes can also help with coordination skills.

Some people start very young children, such as toddler ages, on simple instruments which can start and initial musical development. For example, tambourines, small glockenspiels, are perfect for this. In addition, their cost is very low but the overall advantages that using these types of instruments on children of young ages is enormous. They can start to develop coordination skills, movement skills, aural skills, visual and memory skills just as an example.

Following the younger years, children will probably start to develop musical interests in instruments that are more mechanical and provide a good response with necessary control. If your child is interested in learning the piano, it could be more worthwhile to purchase a keyboard initially not only to "test the water" but to start to provide some form of pianistic playing and learning. The keyboard is a great place to start for those who are initially interested in learning to play the piano. Once musical flair and interest in the piano is developed further, then the purchase of a piano will probably be necessary.

The learning of any musical instrument for a child from their younger years upwards is a great way for them to develop mentally and artistically. If there are signs of musical ability shown in an instrument or in music generally from a young age, the ability to nurture the interest and almost invest physically in time and money can be rewarding to the child. Their skills, abilities, interests and overall personal development can be seen through learning a musical instrument.
